Biography
David Parkin
David is the winner of Australia's first "Operatunity Oz" competition, a joint production between Opera Australia and the ABC which was televised late in 2006. Other competition successes have included winning the 2009 Opera Foundation Australia Lady Fairfax New York Scholarship and being placed as a finalist in the McDonald's Operatic Aria.
Prior to entering Operatunity Oz David had received only a handful of singing lessons and performed his first aria for the semi-final of the competition. He learnt the piano at school, and also studied for his AMusA in the tuba. Whilst studying Computer Engineering at the University of Sydney, he gained invaluable experience in all aspects of the theatre. As a singer he performed in Fauré's Requiem, Dvorak's and Berlioz's Te Deum, Mozart's Mass in C Minor, and Carmina Burana. Musical Theatre performances included roles in Guys and Dolls, Fiddler on the Roof, The Mikado, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Into the Woods, Jesus Christ Superstar, and City of Angels. He also worked on many productions assisting as technical director, lighting and set designer, and recording engineer.
Since winning Operatunity Oz, while continuing his role as a Senior Consultant for leading international technology firm FTI Consulting, David has enjoyed intensive vocal and language coachings under the guidance of Sharolyn Kimmorley and Glen Winslade. He has recorded a CD with ABC Classics and performed the role of Sparafucile in Opera Australia's Rigoletto.
David's engagements with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra have included a Verdi Gala in the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, La Fanciulla del West and the "Classical Spectacular" at the Rod Laver Arena. He also performed in Opera in the Vineyard, Stanthorpe Queensland, as well as covering the roles of Masetto and Commendatore in Opera Australia's Don Giovanni. In 2008, David made his debut with Pinchgut Opera in their production of Charpentier's opera David and Jonathan.
In 2009 David performed the King in Aida for OA's Sydney season and Sparafucile in Rigoletto for Opera Queensland.
David’s 2010 engagements included Mozart’s Requiem with Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Verdi’s Requiem with Canberra Symphony Orchestra. David also returned to Opera Australia to perform the role of Sparafucile in Rigoletto and made his debut for the State Opera of South Australia as the King in their production of Aida.
In 2011 David continues as a principal artist with Opera Australia where his roles will include Police Officer and Basilio (Barber of Seville), Colline (La bohème) and Commendatore (Don Giovanni).
