Biography
David Thelander
South Australian baritone David Thelander graduated from the Elder Conservatorium in 1997 with an Associate Diploma in Music and then again in 1999 with a Bachelor of Music gaining entry into Honours in 2000.
In 2000, David became a Young Artist with the State Opera of South Australia. He took part in a preview of Graeme Koehne’s On the Beach in 2001 and in 2002 sang the role of Don Inigo Gomez in their production of Ravel’s L’Heure Espagnole.
As a concert performer David has been soloist in Handel’s Messiah, Poulenc’s Le Bal Masque, Male Speaker in Walton’s Façade and Mozart’s Missa Brevis in C as well as performing Schumann’s Dichterliebe, Beethoven’s An Die Ferne Geliebte and Finzi’s By Footpath and by Stile.
In January 2002 David was invited to Hong Kong to perform the role of Krusina and work on the role of Kecal in the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts’ production of Smetana’s The Bartered Bride.
He made his debut for the Australian Opera Studio singing the role of Ariodat in Handel’s Xerxes, then went on to sing Leporello in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Conte Gil in Wolf-Ferrari’s Il Segreto di Susanna, Colonel Frank in Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, the title role in Handel’s Giulio Cesare, Collatinus in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia and again the title roles in Massenet’s Don Quichotte and Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro both to critical acclaim.
Recent roles include Schaunard in La Bohème and the High Priest in Nabucco for SOSA, Escamillo in Carmen for OzOpera; he also appeared in concert with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the Southern Sinfonia, Dunedin and The Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo. In 2007, he made his Opera Australia debut in The Pirates of Penzance and appeared in Un Ballo in Maschera, Little Women and Il Barbiere di Siviglia for SOSA.
In 2008, David Thelander became a full-time soloist with Opera Australia and performed in Strauss’ Arabella. He also sang the title role in The Marriage of Figaro for State Opera of South Australia and appeared in concert with the ASO. In 2009, he sings major roles with Opera Australia in Werther and Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and with SOSA in The Tales of Hoffmann.
